For example, “Haagse Hopjes” originates from the 18th century and refers to Baron Hendrik Hop who indirectly created the candy. The candy is known for having a coffee flavour. It is now known and loved throughout the country and intertwined in the Dutch culture. Namely, every Dutch person will know what a “Haags Hopje” is. In addition to this coffee candy, we also hold in our collection a type of candy that is much like butterscotch. To illustrate, this candy is called: “Zeeuwse Boterbabbelaar” literally translated as ‘the buttery chatterbox of Zeeland’. This candy is sweet, buttery and melts in your mouth. The name stems from the fact that whilst visiting someone you were offered a cup of tea or coffee. However, most people could not afford to offer their visitors sugar since this was rather expensive. Thus, with the second cup of coffee or tea a “boterbabbelaar” was provided as a cheaper replacement and would keep the people chattering away or “babbelen”.
